Ever since moving to Berks County a year ago, I’ve been impressed with the generous nature of people in the community. It seems you can’t go anywhere without meeting someone who’s on assignment in a volunteer capacity or someone who works for an organization that relies upon volunteers for its very existence. Look around; those people and organizations are everywhere.

Not too long ago we started doing some interviews, with the idea of highlighting the work of these good people and letting you know about some of the opportunities that are out there.

Joan Breisch, Executive Director at Literacy Council of Reading-Berks, Inc., spoke with us recently about the history of the organization, its mission, and the need for volunteers to help tutor and provide other kinds of support. The Council teaches adults to read, write, and speak English, mainly through the efforts of one-on-one volunteer tutors and people who lead conversation classes and citizenship classes.

The Council also offers several structured programs throughout the year to help raise awareness and generate funds. We spoke with Joan about these and be sharing more information with you in the coming weeks.

With this segment, we kick off a series highlighting volunteer opportunities in Berks County and the organizations that sponsor those opportunities. Looking for a chance to volunteer in the area? Stay tuned! We’ve discovered some positions that might be perfect for you.

If you’re interested in volunteering with the Literacy Council of Reading-Berks, Inc., call 610-670-9960 and mention that you’re interested in becoming a tutor.
