Near the top of the list among Berks County Community Foundation’s many philanthropic projects in Berks County are those promoting renewable energy and sustatinable energy businesses.
The foundation is about to embark on a highly symbolic project of its own - building its new headquarters in downtown Reading, PA as a LEED Certified building. The Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) standard speaks to the energy efficiency and environmental impact of buildings.
This week we spoke with Kevin Murphy, President of BCCF, about the project, which he suggests is being done largely to help promote awareness of Green Building techniques in the region.
“We want people to know that this is not some unapproachable thing that’s done by a bunch of hippies sitting around eating granola,” Kevin said.
Visitors to the new BCCF headquaters, scheduled to enter construction phase in late 2007, will find themselves immersed in a learning experience about the building itself - from widescreen monitors in the lobby explaining how the building runs on windpower, with a webcam trained on the Pennsylvania windmills that harness the power, to signs in rest rooms enlightening guests on the finer points of waterless urinals.
Look for more segments on environmentalism and sustainability on Berks.TV in the coming weeks and months plus more from Kevin Murphy about the BCCF.
